With a history of more than 60 years in the development of hydrogen solutions, Air Products, one of the largest in the industrial gases sector, has stood out in projects for the production and distribution of green and blue hydrogen and reinforced its commitment to safety and sustainability by investing in technologies for decarbonization. The company participated in the Hydrogen Expo, an event held on the 20th and 21st of June, in Rio de Janeiro, and highlights its innovative projects, such as the plant in Alberta and other initiatives around the world. Find out more below.

Global projects

The company is implementing blue hydrogen projects and playing a key role in the global transition to low-carbon energy. An example of this is the Zero Emission Hydrogen Power Complex in Alberta, Canada, which will receive government funding of approximately $475 million (CAD).

This initiative will allow Air Products to build a world-class complex, becoming one of the most competitive and lowest-carbon hydrogen network operators in the world.

Another initiative of the company is the Louisiana Clean Energy Complex, in the United States, an investment of $4.5 billion that aims to produce hydrogen with low carbon emissions to supply the mobility and industry market in the Gulf of Mexico region.

With advanced technologies for carbon capture and clean energy generation, the complex will significantly contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the US state's goals of achieving zero emissions by 2050.

“In 2021, Air Products customers avoided the emission of 82 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). We share society's concerns regarding the impacts of environmental changes. That is why we announced projects and are committed to growing throughout the hydrogen chain, placing sustainability as one of our pillars”, says Pedro Batista, Non-Conventional Business Development manager at Air Products.

Sustainable aviation

Another ongoing project is World Energy in Paramount, California (USA), where the company is investing US$2.5 billion for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This facility will be the world's first and the only commercial-scale facility in North America.

The company expanded its network of hydrogen pipelines in Southern California to supply hydrogen to the World Energy facility, increasing supply reliability. This initiative supports California's decarbonization goals and responds to growing demand for a renewable fuel in the aviation industry.

Brazilian potential

In the Brazilian market, the company sees significant potential for hydrogen, considering the country's renewable energy matrix. With an active participation in events such as the Hydrogen Expo 2023, Air Products seeks to stimulate the discussion and development of initiatives focused on sustainability.

“We strongly believe in Brazil's potential as one of the world leaders in the production of this fuel and I emphasize that the existing technologies for carbon capture and sequestration are fundamental to complement our leap towards a more sustainable ecosystem”, explains Pedro Batista.
