The National Economic and Social Development Bank (BNDES) confirmed on Friday (9) the early repayment of R $ 100 billion contributed by the National Treasury to the institution in the period from 2009 to 2014. The expectation is that the operation is feasible until December 31 of this year. The decision to approve the return was taken on Thursday (8) at night by the bank's Board of Directors.
According to the BNDES, this was the stage that was lacking to carry out the resource return operation, deemed by the Brazilian Court of Audit (TCU) last November. After approval by the TCU, Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles said that the decision confirms and reinforces the fiscal adjustment that the government has promoted in Brazil.
Initially, the return of the R $ 100 billion would be made in three annual installments until 2018, one of R $ 40 billion and two of R $ 30 billion each. The decision to return the amount at one time was taken after the endorsement by the TCU.
This operation is a return of funds loaned by the Treasury to BNDES. In total, the resources delivered by the government to the bank totaled R $ 500 billion. The payment, although the volumes are expressive, does not have the potential to cause problems to the institution.
