After the meeting between President Michel Temer and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa on Tuesday 1 November, Brazil and Portugal signed four bilateral cooperation agreements. One of the areas covered by such agreements is the promotion of sustainable energy, including innovative low-carbon urban mobility systems.

The Portuguese Prime Minister pointed out that technological cooperation between the two countries may lead to the production of electric vehicles, a project that he described as 'ambitious'.

“A very ambitious new project, which has indeed been contemplated in two of the agreements we have just signed, is linked to the production of vehicles that are fully propelled by electricity”, said Costa.

Temer highlighted the 'modern agenda' uniting the two countries, with a focus on technology and innovation. “Cooperation in science and technology, which has been the object of three agreements, (...) is the new frontier of our bilateral relationship”, he said.

One of the points highlighted in the relationship between Brazil and Portugal was the construction of the KC-390 aircraft by Embraer, with some of its parts produced in Évora, in Portugal.

The agreements also aim at strengthening the discussions leading to Brazil's participation in the Azores International Research Centre. The Brazilian mission will focus on scientific, technological and business development to face the challenges of climate change.
