President Michel Temer has promulgated a Brazil-United States agreement in the area of Social Security. According to the wording, beginning on October 1 this year, Brazilians residing in the United States and Americans living in Brazil will be able to add the contribution periods in the two countries to achieve the minimum working time required to obtain retirement by age and disability and receive pension for death.

The measure will benefit 1.3 million Brazilians and about 35,000 Americans. According to the Ministry of Finance's Secretariat of Social Security, Brazil already has bilateral agreements in force in this area with Germany, Belgium, Cape Verde, Canada, Chile, South Korea, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Portugal and Quebec.

Multilateral agreements have also been established with Mercosur countries (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) and the countries of the Ibero-American peninsula (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, Ecuador, Spain, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay).
