The consumption of industrial goods in the Brazilian market grew 9.3% in January 2020 compared to December 2019, according to the Indicator of Apparent Consumption of Industrial Goods of the Institute of Economic and Applied Research (Ipea). It measures the sum of imports of industrial goods and industrial production that has not been exported.

 

The growth was stronger in the demand for imports, which grew 14.6% in relation to December. Demand for domestic industrial goods increased by 8%.

 

In the comparison between January 2020 and the same month of 2019, the increase in apparent consumption of industrial goods was 5.4%, including imports and local production. The growth in demand for domestic goods was also 5.4%, while that for the purchase of imported goods was 6.2%.

 

More research numbers 

When analyzing the accumulated consumption of the 12 months ended in January, there was an increase of 0.1%. During this period, industrial production fell 1%, according to the Monthly Industrial Survey, of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

 

Semi and non-durable consumer goods fell by 1.5% in consumption, while capital goods rose 18.3%. There was also a high demand for intermediate goods in January: 5.8%.

 

Of the 22 segments of the manufacturing industry, 17 had an increase in demand, the highlight being that of other transport equipment, with a 31.9% increase.
