The Port of Rio de Janeiro has received, for the first time, the CMA CGM Bahia, the largest dual-fuel container ship in operation on the South American route. Representing the latest generation of sustainable ships, this remarkable container vessel, with a length of 336 meters, maximum capacity of 13,200 TEUs, and powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), was built in 2023 and is considered a milestone in the shipping industry. Docked at Rio Brasil Terminal, it is scheduled to depart this Friday, the 19th, at 4:30 PM, after handling a total of 1033 containers, with 899 unloaded and 134 loaded.

The modern vessel, operated by the French shipping company CMA CGM, utilizes a dual-fuel LNG power system and features a 14,000 cubic meters Mark III cargo containment system for LNG. According to the shipbuilder, Hudong-Zhonghua, the Integrated Cryogenic Exhaust Gas Recirculation (ICER) system can reduce methane slip in gas mode by 50% and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by over 28%.

The CMA CGM Bahia not only prioritizes energy efficiency but also incorporates advanced technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. An imposing wind deflector at the bow provides significant fuel savings during voyages, while energy-saving devices at the stern enhance propeller propulsion efficiency.

The arrival of the CMA CGM Bahia at the Port of Rio de Janeiro represents a crucial moment in the pursuit of transitioning to green fuels and more eco-friendly navigation, reinforcing the industry's commitment to a cleaner and more efficient maritime future.
