After eight hours of debates, Brazil’s lower house approved the main text of the reform in the country’s pension system at a Wednesday evening (Jul 10) floor session. The overhaul received 379 favorable votes against 131 opposing it.

Earlier on, representatives had agreed to disregard changes brought forward individually and to consider only those proposed in groups.

To be approved, the bill needed 308 votes—three fifths of lower house members. If the plan is approved in the second round, it will be submitted to the Senate for another two rounds, where it must garner the favorable votes of 49 senators.

The discussion on the main piece was opened at around 5 pm, after the lower house rejected the last motion to have it crossed out of the agenda.
