The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) reported on Friday that the decarbonisation goals for transport established by the federal RenovaBio program will be discussed again in the face of the impacts of the crisis on fuel consumption, as previously anticipated by Valor.

The discussion will take place within the scope of the RenovaBio Committee, coordinated by Pasta. A new proposal must be submitted to public consultation and, subsequently, submitted for deliberation by the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE).

The target for this year is 28.7 million tonnes of avoided carbon emissions through the replacement of fossil fuels with biofuels. To meet the target, distributors are obliged to purchase Decarbonization Credits (CBios).

According to the MME, this obligation for distributors, given the drop in fuel sales, "may represent a burden on the obligation. In addition, with the drop in demand, there is no guarantee that there will be the sale of biofuels in sufficient volume to generate the required quantity of CBIOs to meet the mandatory emission reduction target ".
