The Union of the Sugarcane Industry (UNICA) and the National Sugar-Energy Forum (FNS) evaluate as positive the manifestation of full support to the National Biofuels Policy (RenovaBio) of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) published today on the website of the institution. The text is consistent with the MME discourse and practice, which has repeatedly recognized RenovaBio's strategic significance for Brazil and worked towards its implementation, in addition to being extremely opportune at the time when a group of fuel distributors invested against the program in search of a license to pollute.

“The Ministry of Mines and Energy reaffirms its full support for the National Biofuels Policy (RenovaBio) and ratifies that the mandatory annual decarbonisation targets for the commercialization of fuels under the National Biofuels Policy (RenovaBio), for this year are in force and must be fulfilled by the obligated agents until December 31, 2020 ”, the note explains.

“When establishing its position, MME guarantees the application of a decarbonization state policy, which is a great asset for Brazil to consolidate its position as a world leader in preserving the environment. It is necessary to prevent the movement of some distributors that want to keep the country in the last century when trying to escape their commitments to the Brazilians and the world in the fight against global warming ”, evaluates Evandro Gussi, president of UNICA.

In this sense, the text reinforces that “Brazilian society, through the National Congress, chose the National Biofuel Policy, RenovaBio, instituted by Law No. 13,576, of December 26, 2017, as an integral part of the national energy policy” and that the revision of the CBIOs target by 50% for the current year was discussed and analyzed by the RenovaBio Committee, supported by objective technical studies and submitted to Public Consultation No. 94/2020.

“This process gave the desired predictability for the good functioning of the sector. CBIOs are being registered and marketed by biofuel producers, and since April this year, fuel distributors are acquiring their decarbonization credits. Up to now, around 14 million CBIOs have been issued, which corresponds to more than 95% of the annual decarbonization target, which is due to be completed by the end of this year ”, points out the text.
