In order to discuss the potentials for Green Hydrogen (H2V) in Brazil, the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK) of Rio de Janeiro held, over this Tuesday (25), a workshop with representatives of the governments of Brazil and Germany, in addition to potential national and international investors. On the occasion, the commercial director of the Pecém Complex, Duna Uribe, gave details about the Green Hydrogen HUB that will be implemented in Ceará and how the competitive advantages of the Pecém Complex can transform the State into a major producer and exporter of clean fuel.

According to Duna, the Pecém Complex has all the competitive advantages to become a large cluster of Green Hydrogen. “We have enormous potential for generating renewable energy, in addition to a strategic location; tax incentives differentiated from an SPA; robust infrastructure; and a solid business ecosystem, including the partnership with the Port of Rotterdam, which will be the HUB that imports H2V into Europe ”, he adds.

The commercial director of Complexo do Pecém also recalls that an area of 200 hectares, with strong potential for the production of Hydrogen, has already been identified on the Complex's premises. According to projections, if installed in this area, Ceará's Green Hydrogen HUB would have the capacity to produce, annually, around 900 thousand tons of clean fuel.

“We are in Ceará, a state where more than 45% of the energy matrix already comes from wind generation. In the future, this percentage will exceed 70%, including photovoltaic solar energy. This natural potential of Ceará and the Northeast as a whole, combined with the differentials of the Pecém Complex, leads us to believe that we will have, in the Green Hydrogen HUB, an electrolysis capacity (process in which H2V is obtained) of 5 gigawatts ( GW) ”, points out Duna.

Ansgar Pinkowski, Innovation and Sustainability Manager at AHK Rio de Janeiro, also endorsed the potential of the Northeast region for the generation of renewable energies and, consequently, of Hydrogen Green. a geographically favored region on routes to Europe and the United States, has this natural aptitude for generating clean energy. This is fundamental for the development of the H2V chain in the area, which has everything to stand out ”, he says.

Still according to Pinkowski, Germany estimates to invest 9 billion euros, until 2030, to decarbonize the country, of which 2 billion euros will be destined to the import of hydrogen, preferably green, from partner countries. According to Peggy Schulz, representative of the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy, in this context, Brazil stands out as a “great example of possible and economically viable import for the H2V chain”, she comments.

“Green Hydrogen is a new technology, which still has a small internal consumption in Germany. By 2030, however, we estimate a massive increase in this demand, mainly in the industry and in the transport sector. Thus, in addition to increasing our domestic production, we will have to import Green Hydrogen to meet local needs, ”concludes Peggy Schulz.
