On Tuesday, Oct 24, Petrobras’ Director for Engineering, Technology and Innovation, Carlos José Travassos, joined the opening of the congress OTC Brasil 2023, which ends on Thursday, in Rio de Janeiro. He added that the company will receive the OTC Distinguished Achievement Award Brasil 2023, for its leadership role in offshore activities, as well as technology in this segment.

On Thursday (26/10), Petrobras will receive the award in recognition of the development of a pioneering technology aimed at the construction and intervention of wells: the Blowout Preventer – a safety machine that controls well pressure, associated with riser analysis (interconnection column from the probe to the well) in real time. This technological innovation allows the use of more modern dynamic positioning probes, in deep and shallow waters, thus replacing the use of anchored units.

In his speech, Travassos was proud of the 70th anniversary of Petrobras, “a young lady, who has been reinventing herself”, to conclude that “oil and gas will be the source of energy for many years, but that Petrobras focuses its attention in the future of the industry”.

He recalled that this will be the second award received by Petrobras at OTC Brasil and that, internationally, the company has already received four other awards at the congress. According to him, the company broke the record for patent filing requests with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) for the second consecutive year. Travassos stated that the company has built an environment of innovation, which will lead us into the future, as the path of technological innovation is also supporting the company in its work in the fair energy transition. “We need to work together with partners and suppliers.”

The way he sees it, the energy sector has major challenges ahead: “Reconciling the expansion of access to energy, energy security and the timely reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and at acceptable costs for society. Being ready for the energy transition requires creating an environment that involves several factors, such as regulation, infrastructure, human capital, funding sources and new technologies to restructure the energy systems that exist today”, concluded Travassos.
