Energy consumption in the country is already approaching recovery, according to the preliminary results of July demonstrated in the most recent study by the Electric Energy Trading Chamber - CCEE. The volume of electricity consumed fell by just 0.7% compared to the same month last year.

In the free market, energy consumption increased 2.0%, maintaining the trend of recovery in activities. The regulated market, on the other hand, fell by 2.0% in the period. The percentages do not consider purges of migration between environments.

For comparison, in April, which recorded the biggest drop due to measures to combat the new coronavirus, the retraction reached 12.1% in the National Interconnected System - SIN, with a decrease of 11.5% in the regulated market and 13.6% in the free market.

The preliminary data take into account the total consumption of the captive market, in which the consumer purchases energy directly from the distributors, and the free market, which allows the choice of supplier and the negotiation of contractual conditions. In addition, the study does not consider data from Roraima, the only state not connected to the national electricity system.

For more details on the recent panorama of the energy sector, consult the CCEE online tool, which presents consumption analyzes on a daily basis, allowing filters by contracting environment, submarket, federative unit and by activity segment.

Fields of activity

With regard to energy demand by industry, excluding the effects of migrations to the free market, the sectors with the most significant falls in July, in the annual comparison, were the automotive industry (-17%), the services sector ( -22%) and transportation (-13%). The textile segment, which had double-digit drops in consumption, closed July with a 7% decrease. Five sectors increased in the annual comparison: beverages (8%), sanitation (7%), non-metallic minerals (4%), food (4%) and chemicals (2%).

Regional analysis

CCEE also analyzed the performance of electricity consumption in the states in July. The scenario shows that nine states showed an increase in energy consumption, with the highest percentage seen in Amapá (8%), and two states with stable consumption (SC and MG).

When analyzing the regulated market in July, demand recovery took place in seven states, while, in the free market, consumption is still falling in only four states.
