Rousseff, Merkel discuss EU-Mercosur partnership

Rousseff pointed out that Germany is Brazil's leading trading partner in Europe and the fourth worldwide, adding that there is still scope to increase trade and investment flows. She also said that Brazil and Mercosur are keen to advance negotiations with the European Union to expand and diversify trade, instancing automotive, chemicals, and oil & gas as promising industries.

The president of Brazil went on to highlight Germany's active role in the global, cross-sector meeting on the future of Internet governance last year, and reiterated her compliments on the two countries for partnering to protect people's rights on the Web. “The draft resolution on protecting privacy in the digital age submitted by our two countries and approved by the UN General Assembly last year is very positive. The challenge of ensuring protection to individual and democratic rights in the information society demands a strategic approach and increased attention of the international community,” she said.

According to Angela Merkel, the two countries are strategic partners. “We have 1,300 companies economically active in this country, and we want even more German companies doing business in Brazil so we can strengthen our relations. There is still a lot of work to do about double taxation, and Germany can help on that,” she said. The German chancellor noted Germany's interest in partnering for energy and infrastructure projects in Brazil.

“We share many interests, and one of them is advancing a free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union without any hurdles,” she completed.
