The ANP has started a partnership this month with the Brazilian Navy on a project to submit a request to the United Nations (UN) for the extension of the Brazilian continental shelf (the submerged extension of the continent), specifically along the Eastern/Southern Margin, located off the coasts of the South, Southeast, and Northeast regions of the country.

The ANP's involvement in the new project began on May 7, during a meeting of the Subcommission for the Brazilian Continental Shelf Survey Plan (LEPLAC), led by the Navy, with the Agency’s participation.

This project is similar to the one that resulted in a UN decision, in March of this year, to extend Brazil's continental shelf in the Northern/Northeastern region, related to the Equatorial Margin.

The ANP contributes by sharing technical data to support the Brazilian Navy's studies, including seismic and well data. These are stored in the Agency’s Exploration and Production Database (BDEP).

Technical data is essential for the project, as the study must demonstrate to the UN that the submerged rock formations are a natural extension of the Brazilian continental shelf.

As in the previous project, the ANP is also providing the Navy access to its Data Visualization Room, which uses advanced technological tools to facilitate the viewing and selection of the highest-quality data.

Some of the data shared by the ANP is confidential. However, current legislation (ANP Resolution No. 889/2022) allows it to be shared with the Navy in matters of national interest, provided the Navy also ensures the confidentiality of the information.
