Brazil has unique conditions to lead the energy transition in the international transport sector. To strengthen this strategic position, the seminar “Sustainable Biofuels for International Transport – Aligning Real Opportunities with Global Policies” will take place on July 7, at Hotel Prodigy, Rio de Janeiro. The event is organized by the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), Amcham Brasil (American Chamber of Commerce for Brazil), the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), the Brazil-China Business Council (CEBC), and the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI). Experts will gather to discuss the opportunities and challenges of this agenda, which is already gaining relevance in discussions ahead of COP30.

As the second-largest biofuel producer in the world, Brazil is well-positioned to lead efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in international transport—a sector where electrification faces technical and economic barriers. According to the Transport Coalition study, biofuel demand in Brazil is expected to increase by 25 billion liters by 2050. The sustainable production of biofuels promotes job creation, income generation, technological innovation, and development. It also supports the circular economy by utilizing waste and crops grown on degraded land without competing with food production.

During the event, participants will be presented with the “Joint Declaration on Sustainable Biofuels as a Solution for the Decarbonization of International Transport,” developed by iCS, Amcham, CEBDS, and CEBC. The document outlines policy recommendations on public policy, financing, certification, and innovation, aiming to transform Brazil’s potential into global leadership. The declaration will be submitted to COP30 leaders as well as government, business, and multilateral institution representatives.

With a focus on sustainable biofuels for air and maritime transport, the seminar will feature discussions on solutions such as SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), biomethanol, and mechanisms like Book and Claim. Barriers to unlocking investments and aligning international regulatory standards will also be addressed.
