British company Magma Global, manufacturer of the world’s most advanced subsea pipe, is to commence testing and qualification of its products in Brazil. Magma’s m-pipe® is qualified to DNV standards and will undergo further qualification in Brazil to pre-salt specifications. Upon qualification Magma fully intends to establish a new manufacturing facility in Brazil. Magma entered the Brazilian O&G market by partnering with leading companies in Brazil to develop next-generation riser systems which use m-pipe® to solve the challenges of the pre-salt. Magma’s Executive VP in the US, Tony Duncan, is in Brazil to explain the company’s plans for the Brazilian market.

Duncan says: “The Brazilian Oil & Gas sector has been highly receptive to Magma’s m-pipe® solution, which was developed specifically for challenging oil production environments. Brazil has shown itself as an innovator in finding the right solutions for the environment here and is the already the world leader in its infrastructure for flexible pipes. We believe Brazil will once again lead the world in its adoption of thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) and will reap the benefits of composite pipe expertise and infrastructure when other O&G markets around the world follow. We are in talks with local universities to continue our testing and qualification programme in Brazil and the next step will be to establish a local manufacturing facility here.”

Established in 2009, with offices in the USA, Angola, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, Magma Global has achieved a global presence manufacturing m-pipe®, a Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (TCP) that provides high corrosion resistance, significant weight reduction and high temperature, high pressure capability. Magma’s m-pipe® is being used for next generation deepwater riser designs in the form of a riser tower with Ocyan and a hybrid flexible pipe for TechnipFMC.

Magma Global officially entered the Brazilian market in 2018 by partnering with Ocyan. Together the two companies developed the CompRiser® specifically for the Brazilian market. CompRiser® is a riser tower that uses m-pipe® for production in deepwater and ultra-deepwaters. The riser was presented to the sector during the last Rio Oil & Gas and was welcomed as an innovative solution. The CompRiser® concept is under assessment by Petrobras to be used in new projects as well as by DNV GL for international accreditation. The CompRiser® will be assembled at BrasFels, the Brazilian branch of Keppel Offshore & Marine, the global leader in offshore rig design, construction and repair, ship repair and conversion, and specialized shipbuilding.

CompRiser® has a compact and modular manufacturing method which allows high local content. The m-pipe® risers are stored and transported on reels and does not require welding, which simplifies the bundle assembly, allowing it to take place in less than 30 days. The offshore installation takes another 20 days, without the need of special vessels, and with minimal risk from exposure to bad weather conditions.

About Magma Global:

Magma Global created m-pipe® to solve the problems that were a challenge to steel and flexibles: corrosion, high temperatures, high pressures and speed and ease of deployment. Made from PEEK and carbon fibre, m-pipe simplifies subsea architecture thanks to its low weight, high strength, flexibility and standardised design. m-pipe is used as flowlines and jumpers by major operators around the world and achieves installed cost savings of up to 65%. Magma’s game changing technology is now solving riser challenges and is incorporated into hybrid solutions by TechnipFMC and Ocyan.
