OTC Houston 2024

Firjan at OTC Houston: drilling of wells destined for the oil production process increased by 33% in 2023.

According to the survey "Petroleum Figures 2024 - Rio Vision," conducted by the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro, the national average production increased from 3.02 MM bpd in 2022 to 3.40 MM bpd last year, representing a 13% increase. However, reserve recovery is concerning due to the low activity in exploratory well drilling. These data will be presented starting today at OTC Houston 2024.

From 2022 to 2023, the number of new wells dedicated to the production of oil and gas in the country increased by 33%, rising from 54 new wells in the previous year to 72 in 2023. Meanwhile, the average production increased from 3.02 MM bpd (million barrels per day) in 2022 to 3.40 MM bpd last year, a growth of 13%. These data are part of the “Números do Petróleo 2024 – Visão Rio” survey, consolidated from the 2023 Oil Yearbook - published by the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro (FIRJAN) - which will be presented from this Monday (6/4) at OTC Houston 2024, in the United States, the largest Offshore Technology Conference in the world.

The document confirms the potential of the state of Rio de Janeiro in oil and gas production in the country. The revitalization of mature fields in the Campos Basin, with the expansion of activity and diversity of producers, is beginning to show more results. In 2023, there was a 17% increase in volumes produced, reaching an annual average close to 800 thousand barrels/day. Of these volumes, 80% of the production was in Rio de Janeiro waters, which benefited from the operation of two new platforms in the Marlim field: FPSO Ana Nery and FPSO Anita Garibaldi.

Also, the Santos Basin, the country's main oil-producing region, increased oil production by 12% last year, reaching an average of 2.5 million barrels/day. In this region, the state of Rio de Janeiro accounts for 90% of what is extracted. As a result, in 2023, Rio de Janeiro increased its representativeness in national production, reaching 86% of the total volume, with 2.9 million barrels/day, of which 2.3 million barrels/day came from pre-salt fields.

"Rio de Janeiro is the main destination for oil and gas opportunities in the country. In addition to the various economic and social benefits that oil attracts, we need to develop new markets related to the transition and energy integration based on the expertise we have already developed, enabling, for example, offshore wind and hydrogen projects in the Northern Fluminense. This without neglecting the renewal of our oil reserves with exploratory campaigns in Rio de Janeiro waters, but also in new frontiers," says Luiz Césio Caetano, vice president of Firjan, who is leading the Rio de Janeiro delegation in Houston.

The survey also highlights the need for greater attention to reserve replacement, given that exploratory well drilling activity continues to decline. Even with Rio reinforcing its potential by representing 75% of the exploration wells drilled in 2023, compared to 63% in 2022, the number of exploration wells drilled in the country fell from 11 to just eight.

The survey "Oil Numbers 2024 - Rio Vision" also highlights government revenue in 2023 from oil production in the country. Due to the exchange rate and barrel prices last year, there was a decrease in revenue. However, even so, the numbers reached significant values, driven by increased production.

Total values in the country in royalties and special shares reached the second-highest figure in the historical series, with over R$ 93 billion. Given its representativeness in production and the impacts of oil-related activities, the state of Rio and the municipalities in Rio de Janeiro, between special shares and royalties, received around R$ 42 billion of the total amount.

Offshore Technology Conference - OTC

The OTC (Offshore Technology Conference) will once again feature the participation of Firjan SENAI SESI, with its own booth in the Brazil Pavilion at OTC Houston. In partnership with ApexBrasil, whose role is to promote Brazil's potential to the world, the Rio de Janeiro federation will showcase to international companies the services offered by the SENAI and SESI Institutes of Technology (ISTs) and Innovation (ISIs), professional qualification courses, as well as current international partnerships.

In addition to Caetano, the Rio de Janeiro delegation includes federation vice president Raul Sanson and entrepreneurs from the oil and gas market. The 2024 edition of OTC also sees the return of Petrobras with its own booth. Thus, the Brazilian delegation reinforces its representation, investing to remain the largest presence of foreign representatives at the world's premier offshore energy conference. According to ApexBrasil, 53 exhibiting companies are at the conference prospecting new business for Brazil.
