The TEM Boaventura Consortium, formed by Tenenge, EGTC and Mota-Engil, has reached another important project milestone by lifting and positioning the first reactor for the Catalytic Hydrocracking (HCC) Unit at the Boaventura Energy Complex in Rio de Janeiro.

The unit processes heavy oil fractions, transforming them into higher-value products such as S-10 diesel and aviation kerosene (QAV). It will help strengthen the refining supply chain and meet domestic market demand.

For this large-scale operation, the consortium deployed the PT50, currently the largest land-based crane operating in Latin America, with a rated capacity of 2,000 tonnes. The use of this equipment highlights the scale and technical complexity of the lift, which was made possible by extensive planning, engineering and operational management.

Weighing approximately 997 tonnes, the reactor was raised to a vertical position using a system comprising a tailing frame mounted on self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). This engineered solution provides a high level of control, stability and safety throughout every stage of the move and upending operation. The tailing frame is an auxiliary steel structure designed to support, guide and rotate the lower end—the “tail”—of a tall vertical load.

The successful completion of this operation marks significant progress in the project schedule and demonstrates the technical expertise, teamwork and commitment of the TEM Boaventura Consortium to operational excellence, innovation and, above all, safety—a non-negotiable value at every stage of the project.

“Lifting the first reactor is a major milestone for the project and reflects the joint efforts of dozens of professionals involved in planning, engineering and execution. An operation of this scale demonstrates the capabilities of our teams and reinforces our confidence in the project’s success,” says Antenor de Castro, Contract Director.
