Abiquim represented Brazil in the special session “Regional Panorama of Precio al Carbono en Latinoamérica”, which ended the sixth edition of the course “Diplomado en Carbon Markets”, conducted by the Asociacíon Nacional de la Industria Quimica (ANIQ), from Mexico; the Mexican carbon platform, MexiCO2; and the Carbon Trust consultancy.

The special session “Regional Panorama of Precio al Carbono en Latinoamérica” was held, on October 29, by videoconference, and also featured presentations by experts in carbon pricing and climate change from the government and the private sector of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Dominican Republic, Venezuela.

Brazil was represented by Abiquim's Sustainability manager, Aline Bressan, who presented the general aspects of local discussions on the topic, the current political scenario, highlighting the Association's position on carbon pricing, which highlights the chemical sector as a supplier of solutions for sustainable development and reduction of emissions.

Aline emphasized Abiquim's engagement in discussions on carbon pricing in Brazil, including participation as a member of the PMR Project Advisory Committee - Partnership for Market Readiness, an initiative of the World Bank in partnership with the Ministry of Economy, which studies the feasibility the implementation of economic instruments for carbon pricing in the country. The manager of Abiquim also highlighted the Association's initiative to intensify the dialogue with the various interested parties and to reinforce the strategic perspective of this agenda, through the formation of the Multidisciplinary Group on Climate Change , which has the participation of members of the Environment, Economy and Competitiveness Committees of the GT Energia, in addition to the Committee for Sustainable Development, all from Abiquim.

The other speakers also shared the national efforts made on climate policy and the situation that currently leads to the reduction of emissions in each country, especially considering the way in which carbon rates have been established, as in the case of Argentina, Chile and Colombia, as well as such as efforts to advance the implementation of a carbon pricing instrument as in the Dominican Republic. Also presented were the carbon footprint tool, established in the private sector in Peru, and the emphasis, in the current political context, on the climate area in Venezuela.

The speakers also addressed the challenges and opportunities arising from the commitments acquired with the signing of the Paris Agreement, the barriers faced, the mitigation instruments such as carbon taxes, perspectives on the emissions trading system and on CO2 absorption by forest reserves.
