On March 26, ANP held a public hearing on the review of the specifications and quality control rules for fossil and alternative aviation kerosene and their mixtures. Aviation kerosene (QAV) is preferably used in large aircraft, unlike aviation gasoline (GAV), used in small piston aircraft.

The main novelty will be the introduction, in Brazil, of aviation kerosene JET-A, commercialized in the international market, which may be imported and produced in the country's refineries. The proposed specifications also allow the maintenance of the JET-A1 kerosene, used today in the country. The goal is to increase the supply of kerosene, generating potential cost savings for aviation companies and airline ticket prices.

At the opening of the hearing, the director of ANP Symone Araújo recalled that "the JET-A expands the alternatives for supplying aviation fuels, and connects us directly to the North American market, where this aviation fuel is widely used, the which generates the possibility of reducing the costs of air operators, with consequent future benefits for the consumer ".

With the new resolution, two new alternative aviation kerosenes will be introduced, approved in 2020 by ASTM International, which can be used in mixtures with fossil kerosenes, expanding the ratio of bioquerosenes and other alternatives regulated by the Agency since 2019.

For director Symone Araújo, "by expanding the competition among potential suppliers of fossil kerosene, without departing from the proactive regulation of biokerosen and kerosene with a lower volume of greenhouse gas emissions, the ANP makes clear its commitment to innovation and to an effectively competitive market ".

The technical feasibility for the regulatory change was evaluated in a study conducted by the ANP, with the participation of the National Civil Aviation Agency - ANAC and other public bodies, companies and national and international associations in the sector, in addition to ASTM, which develops international fuel specifications aviation.

The draft resolution passed a 45-day public consultation, during which 58 contributions were received. The suggestions received at the consultation and at the hearing will be evaluated by the technical area, to change or not the original draft. The consolidated text will undergo legal analysis by the Federal Prosecutor's Office at the ANP and approval by the Agency's collegiate board, before its publication.
