The potential for Brazilian leadership in the global energy transition – whether with the production of clean energy, energy security, or mitigation through nature-based solutions – was the highlight of the first day of Shell Talks 2022. fair (August 25), the event brings together industry and government leaders in thematic panels on the future of energy, with free admission and webcast.

“We are building on Shell’s steps in the future”, said the president of Shell Brasil, Cristiano Pinto da Costa, in the panel “The ESG agenda in the vision of the CEOs”, together with the president of BNDES, Gustavo Montezano, and the general director from Siemens Energy Brasil, André Clark, moderated by journalist Natalia Viri. Cristiano cited projects such as the joint venture between Gerdau and Shell Energy Brasil in a solar plant with a capacity of 260MW, the investment of R$ 200 million in Carbonext – leader in the generation of carbon credits in Brazil – and the Research & Development project in green hydrogen with Porto do Açu.

According to Pinto da Costa, Shell intends to be a “one-stop-shop”, that is, to provide all stages of the decarbonization journey for customers, from mitigating emissions to offsetting carbon credits, through generation or supply. of clean energy. The executive also explained that oil and gas play an important role in the decarbonization journey, by funding research and development of technologies that enable the adoption of renewable energy on a large scale and supporting the transition through natural gas or supporting sectors of the difficult decarbonization economy, for example.

In the conversation, the president of BNDES, Gustavo Montezano, highlighted the opportunity to re-industrialize the country through renewable energy and the entire supply chain necessary for the transport of this energy. “Brazil could be an exporter of this commodity”, he concluded. The Brazilian potential in carbon credits was addressed in the conversation, and the general director of Siemens Energy Brazil, André Clark, recalled that the maintenance of ecosystems also involves other services provided by forests, such as water resources and biodiversity. “Brazil can be the capital of the energy transition and the pole of the planet's biodiversity”, he declared.

In the morning, the panel “Energy security and competitiveness” brought together the vice president of Corporate Relations at Shell Brazil, Flávio Rodrigues, the founding member of Catavento Consultoria, Clarissa Lins and the senior vice president of Global Energy at IHS Markit, Carlos Pascual . Moderated by journalist Carlos Alberto Sardenberg, participants analyzed the volatility of energy prices and energy demand in the context of geopolitical changes, transition to renewable sources and dispute over resources.

Flávio Rodrigues highlighted the good Brazilian record in terms of compliance with contracts and regulatory security for the development of the industry and attractiveness of investments. For the executive, however, the dispute for resources in the global context is a reality that cannot be ignored in the development of new sources, such as offshore wind and green hydrogen. “If Brazil does not take a stand, it may miss this opportunity”, he evaluated.

Clarissa Lins highlighted that, in addition to its privileged position in renewables and NBS, Brazilian oil has other advantages in the context of decarbonization and price volatility, since pre-salt oil has low carbon intensity and is more resilient to price volatility thanks to the abundant productivity of the fields. “Brazil currently has a favorable position both in the energy matrix and in the electrical matrix”, she summarized.

IHS Markit’s Senior Vice President of Global Energy, Carlos Pascual, has a similar view of Brazil’s potential in the current energy context: “Possibly, there is no other economy better positioned than Brazil,” he said, referring to the potential of renewables, NBS and traditional energy resources. Pascual also highlighted that, despite the geopolitical and economic challenges, it is important to make decisions that make the energy transition feasible. “These choices must be made now,” he said, in relation to tackling global warming.
