Equinor's Global Sustainability Vice-President Bjorn Otto Sverdrup participated in a relaxed chat with young professionals and students from the oil and gas sector on Tuesday 13.11 at the headquarters of the Brazilian Institute of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (IBP). With the theme "The Role of the Oil and Gas Industry in Combating Climate Change", the meeting addressed the issues that have dominated debates on the future of energy in the world: energy transition, renewable energy and sustainability.

The conversation began with a teasing of the executive of Equinor, who asked the audience if they think they will make a difference in the oil and gas industry. "You are facing a fantastic opportunity," said Bjorn Otto, noting that the industry and its future professionals are part of the solution to energy issues. The speaker advised the young people never to stop discussing these issues: "Dedicate more and more time studying and talking about climate change and sustainability. There is no plan B".

Bjorn commented on Equinor's recent strategic shift, which not only changed its name, but now is a global energy company, highlighting the three pillars of the company's vision: always safe, high value (competitiveness / sustainability) and low (low emissions of gases into the atmosphere). He mentioned in his presentation two renewable energy projects that the company is currently developing in Brazil: the Apodi solar plant in Ceará, which starts operations in the next few days, and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in September with Petrobras to the development of offshore wind energy projects in the country.

The executive highlighted the great challenge that Equinor is facing on this path: the goal of investing between 15% and 20% of its Capex in new energy solutions by 2030. It also showed examples of the company's continuous search to contribute to the reduction of emissions , such as the CO2 capture and storage system - which already has more than 20 million tonnes of gas stored - and which is today one of the largest initiatives in this regard in the world.

In all, about 30 young professionals from operators and industry service providers and students from important universities with training in oil and gas took part in the lecture. In addition to Equinor's Global Sustainability VP, Bjorn Otto Sverdrup, Equinor's Vice President for Sustainability, Security and Protection in Brazil, Paulo Van Der Ven also participated in the chat.
