The Açu logistics port complex in the North of state of Rio, start operations in March with the opening of the american NOV and French Technip, both suppliers of oil and gas sector. Together, the investments of R$ 650 million of Technip and US$ 750 million of NOV, will generate thousand of jobs. By the end of 2014, there are plans to start operating the units of BP, Vallourec, InterMoor, Wärtsila and Anglo American Pipeline, which will export the Açu iron ore brought from Minas Gerais.
"The start of operations at Açu is just the start of a great enterprise that offers numerous of economic development opportunities to these area", said the Secretary for Economic Development, Julio Bueno.
In December 2013, the Port of Açu was employing 6,303 people, which shows a significant increase over the 3,881 jobs in the area in January last year. Since 2007, the region had an increase in employment of 3,994 to 8,873, with emphasis on the construction, manufacturing and services, an increase of 122 %, while the State of Rio de Janeiro grew by 32 % and North region 38% during the same period. The port also contributed to increase the economy of the city. Just the ISS (tax) increased fromR$750,000 in 2006 to R$ 33 million in 2012.
