SBM Offshore confirmed on Wednesday in the Netherlands that it paid $139.1 million in commissions in Brazil between 2007 and 2011 for its agents in the country, but claimed it did not have "credible evidence" that these payments consisted of bribes to Petrobras employees.
The company’s representative in Brazil was entrepreneur Julio Faerman, of Faerman Group. With the announcement of the end of investigations against SBM in Europe, the Dutch group’s shares rose 4.2% on Wednesday on the Amsterdam stock exchange.
The relief of investors reflects the importance of Brazil for the company, which is the world’s largest manufacturer of floating platforms and mooring of vessels to seabed systems. Sources of the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) told Valor they are awaiting the opinion of the Netherlands' Public Prosecution Service and the US Justice Department on the subject. In Congress, the PMDB (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party) and the PT (Workers' Party) have kept their joint strategy to prevent the installation of a parliamentary investigation committee, known as CPI, to investigate the purchase of the Pasadena refinery by Petrobras. Opposition parties will appeal the decision at the Federal Supreme Court.
