The book "A Economia do Hidrogênio: Transição, descarbonização e oportunidades para o Brasil" ("The Hydrogen Economy: Transition, decarbonization and opportunities for Brazil") will be launched this Tuesday, April 25th. The result of a project developed within the scope of the Research and Development Program (R&D) of the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) and financed by the company Energy Assets do Brasil Ltda with the support of Siemens Energy, the publication presents a comprehensive and current analysis of the framework of technical, financial, economic, regulatory and environmental knowledge in the area of Hydrogen Economy.

Gathering results from the considerations and analyzes of a multidisciplinary team of researchers from GESEL (Electrical Sector Studies Group) of UFRJ and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), the document aims to inform both curious readers and actors of the sector on the state of the art and perspectives for the development of the low-carbon hydrogen economy in Brazil.

The book seeks to systematize analyzes of various vectors of the energy transition with a focus on hydrogen, highlighting: 1) hydrogen production technologies, 2) the regulatory scenario, public policies, institutional arrangements and certification within the scope of inserting hydrogen as a vector for decarbonization; 3) the main international experiences of structuring and developing the hydrogen economy; and 4) the Brazilian experience and potential in the production and use of hydrogen.

A differentiating element of the book is the development of an integrated platform for evaluating low-carbon hydrogen generation, storage, transport and use projects applied to the Brazilian scenario, which will certainly be an important tool for the dissemination of this new renewable energy resource.

"It is with great academic joy that we launch this book, a pioneer in the field of low-carbon hydrogen economics, constituting a consistent and well-founded contribution to subsidize the formation process of the nascent industry of this energy resource that will play a strategic role in in 2050 the CO2 neutrality goals can be reached – and where Brazil will have an active and constructive protagonist role", says Nivalde de Castro, professor at the Institute of Economics at UFRJ and coordinator of GESEL.

"Brazil has consistent potential to assume a global leadership in the low-carbon hydrogen economy, since our electrical matrix is mostly from renewable sources. Prospecting and investment projects are already underway that will consolidate the production chain of the H2V industry , however, it is still necessary to clearly address the challenges ahead. This is precisely the point highlighted in this new book, which shows the possible paths for cooperation between governments and the private sector, with regulations and policies to encourage infrastructure for this new market energy", explains André Clark, Senior Vice President for the Latin America hub at Siemens Energy, which supports the publication.
